Metz Epitome - for Agesilaos

Hi Karl A few years back you kindly sent me sections of the Metz Epitome and the Liber de Morte which you translated, for my site alexander-sources.org . I've had a query about them, can you send me your email address then I can speak to you directly. I tried a private message on this site but for s...

Re: Bactra found

I have a small book by Arnold Toynbee, "Between Oxus & Jumna" which describes his historical & archaeological travels in Afghanistan & Pakistan in the early 60s. In it, he speculates on the Hellenestic origins of many of the cities, including Balkh ( ie Bactra). There's a lot o...

I can't believe that I'm replying to this post,

I can't believe that I'm replying to this post, but I am.... James, my son, is devout Muslim through my interest in Alexander.... My husband was injured in the 7/7 bombings in London and we hold absolutely no grudge against Muslims... We will have dearly-loved Muslim grandchildren, and that is the w...

Mills & Boon stuff

Alexander's crawl to the river This is romance indeed - and I think not likely. If you've been in the Middle East and you know what it's like - where were his minders - where were the ubiquitous burly men sitting in plastic chairs with Kalashnikovs ? Look at any TV image of Iraq, Gaza strip... they ...

Handling the tablets

Several of us Pothosians went to the British Museum last year with Jona to see and touch the tablets. It was quite thrilling ! I think that there's a lot more that can be speculated, but is unlikely to appear in print until it can be proven. If they could just use some computer-matching techniques t...

I think that establishing Alexander's itinerary would be very interesting. I haven't yet had a chance to compare the itinerary with the other established routes - it might throw up some other items of interest. I was intrigued by the tale that the Macedonians chased the Scythians to the column of Fa...

Metz Epitome

Agesilaos' translation of the first part of the Metz Epitome is now online at http://websfor.org/alexander/special/metz.asp ( or go to http://www.alexander-sources.org) Thanks, Karl, for all your excellent work on this and other translations. I've updated the site considerably to add in the Epitome,...

Alexander Romance - what sources do you have?

I have the 4 variations of Pseudo-Callisthenes in one book. The first, the greek one is dated at around 300 bc (or since Alexander's time generally) up to the 2nd,3rd century ad. I'm about to publish the Syriac version online ( I have the Ethiopic version too, but there's little sense in that). What ...

Something more imaginative ! Yesterday, Judas Iscariot sang "Heaven knows I'm miserable now" as he betrayed Jesus; and Jesus & Pontius Pilate sang Oasis' Wonderwall. Now that's imagination.

Manchester Passion - what music for Alexander's last days?

Last night British TV showed the Manchester Passion - a retelling of the events of the first Easter with Mancunian songs http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/christianity/features/manchester_passion/ To quote: "The Manchester Passion will retell the last days of Jesus' life using popular mus...

Re: Would Alexander Empire be as Unjustr as Today

Kenny, have you actually read what happened in India when Alexander invaded ? Slaughter of people that posed him no threat. The sources are all that you have to go by, to form a view of his actions, and they show slaughter and massacre. I can't see how you can put an 'Alexander was good and just' gl...

What has this to do with Alexander?

What has this to do with Alexander ? This seems like politicising this forum, which is not meant to happen. In the same way that we try to get people to ignore the current Greek/Macedonian debates, I think we should try to ignore current political & soical situations unless useful lessons can be ...

Re: To add more confusion. . .

Hi AmyntorosYes, well researched, this seems quite plausible - there certainly seems no ancient reference to Aegos that I can find. I did find a poem by Paulinus, (http://www.thelatinlibrary.com/paulinus.poemata.html)a Christian Latin poet, that refers to Aegeos in the context of Macedonia, but I th...
